Having a family pet is awesome. However, sometimes when it comes to the details of taking care of your family pet, some things get lost in translation, especially when there are younger members of the family that are supposed to be taking care of this particular animal.
Most of the experts who specialize in veterinary jobs might advise you to take care of specific details that need your full attention. This can include taking care of oral care, purchasing collars, having your animals microchipped, thinking about sleeping arrangements in advance, and making sure that you buy the right brushes and combs for your pet.
Oral Care
No one likes a dog or cat with smelly breath. And bad breath is also a sign of potential disease in your pet’s mouth. That’s why having a good animal oral care health plan is one of the first things that you should do right after you get your pet. Sometimes this is as easy as buying a pet toothbrush, whereas other times you want to take your animal in regularly to a vet to make sure that they get the deep cleaning they deserve. Some animals aren’t going to let you brush their teeth, so the vet may have to put them under some type of sedation temporarily.
Collars and Microchips
It can be a real tragedy if your family pet gets out and you can’t find them. There are a few ways to make sure this never happens, including making sure that your pets always have colors with identification on them, or even potentially taking them to the vet to get microchipped so that if they ever end up in an animal control situation, there is an easy way to contact you, the owners.
Sleeping Arrangements
One huge source of frustration for families is where pets sleep. No matter how clean you try to keep them, cats and dogs always have hair, dander, and even things like dirt from outside that they keep with them. That means that if you’re an adult, you have to be very clear with your kids about which animals can be on which beds, and if they are going to allow them in children’s sleeping rooms at all. And, if there are babies in the house, extra rules have to be put in place as well. Even the nicest cats can claw and scratch a newborn, which is something to avoid at all costs.
Brushes and Combs
One of the biggest details when it comes to family pets is that you have to take care of their hair. This means you have to buy combs and brushes that suit your animal’s hair type as well as their personality. A pet that is afraid of a comb or brush is never going to let you take care of them properly. There are a million different kinds of options in terms of shape, size, and material, so you have to do a little bit of trial and error until you figure out the best way to keep your animals with a great, healthy coat.
